When Working Families Need Food Relief, We All Need to Pay Attention

Australia is often described as the lucky country. But a newly released report from OzHarvest’s 2026 Frontline Report tells a very different story unfolding quietly in communities across the nation.

The report, based on responses from 875 frontline charities and food relief organisations, reveals that food insecurity in Australia is no longer isolated to moments of crisis. Increasingly, it is becoming part of everyday life for many households.

Some of the findings are deeply confronting:

  • 70% of charities reported increased demand for support in the past 12 months.
  • 36% of people seeking food relief are doing so for the first time.
  • More than 74,000 people are being turned away from food support every month because services cannot keep up with demand.
  • Working families, mortgage holders and dual-income households are now regularly accessing emergency food relief.

For many people, food has become the only flexible part of an increasingly stretched household budget.

The report describes a growing “cost-of-surviving crisis,” where rising housing costs, fuel prices, groceries and utilities are placing enormous pressure on ordinary Australians.

At LinC Yarra Valley, these findings reflect what we are seeing locally.

More people are quietly reaching out for help. Some are seeking support for the very first time. Others are trying to balance work, family responsibilities and rising expenses while still finding themselves unable to make ends meet.

Importantly, behind every statistic is a person.

A parent skipping meals so children can eat.
Someone deciding between fuel and groceries.
A family carrying financial stress silently while trying to maintain normal life.

This is why local community support matters so deeply.

Programs like our Social Supermarkets, fresh food initiatives and emergency relief services are about far more than food alone. They are about dignity, stability and connection. They create breathing room for people navigating incredibly difficult circumstances.

The OzHarvest report also highlights another important reality: Australia’s emergency relief system relies heavily on volunteers, donations and local community care.

We see this every day at LinC Yarra Valley.

We see volunteers faithfully packing fresh produce, welcoming visitors warmly, preparing spaces, transporting donations and building relationships that restore hope and belonging.

We see churches, businesses, grant partners and local residents contributing quietly and generously behind the scenes.

And we see the impact these acts of care have on people who may already feel overwhelmed or isolated.

While the challenges outlined in the report are serious, the response of local communities continues to give us hope.

People still want to help one another.

As demand continues to grow, so too does the importance of organisations, volunteers and supporters willing to stand alongside their community with compassion and practical care.
