Social Supermarkets

  • Social Supermarkets

  • Vicki, Customer

“It’s helped me like you wouldn’t believe. Being disabled and on a pension it’s a battle to eat fresh.”

  • Jock, Volunteer

“The best thing is supplying fresh veggies to people who can’t afford them. I like to see the smile on people’s faces when they come in and see the food.”

  • Michael, Customer

“I don’t take very much as I don’t like throwing anything away. I grow veggies myself anyway. All those things make a difference. It’s as much to come down and have a chat more than anything.”

Our social supermarkets operate across multiple sites each Friday in the Yarra Valley and Mooroolbark region, providing access to fresh food and pantry items for those in need.

What is a social supermarket?

At LinC Yarra Valley, our social supermarkets offer more than food. They provide a welcoming, respectful way for local people to access support when they need it.

Choice
People can choose food that suits their household, dietary needs and cultural preferences, rather than receiving a pre-packed parcel.

Low-cost food
Paying a small amount helps preserve dignity and gives people a sense of agency. It also allows households to stretch their budget further and use their savings for other essentials.

A familiar shopping experience
Our social supermarkets are designed to feel welcoming and familiar, more like a regular shopping experience and less like emergency relief. This can make it easier for people to ask for help, especially for the first time.

Connection and support
The social supermarket is also a place of connection. It creates opportunities for people to meet others, speak with volunteers, learn about support services and feel part of the community.
