Our Social Supermarkets Explained
A LinC Yarra Valley social supermarket is a community-driven initiative providing free access to fresh food and essential items for individuals and families facing hardship in the Yarra Valley and Mooroolbark regions of Victoria. Operated by our network of local churches and volunteers, the program aims to alleviate food insecurity while fostering dignity and social connection.
What Is a Social Supermarket?
Unlike traditional food relief models, LinC Yarra Valley’s social supermarkets empower participants by allowing them to choose their own groceries, promoting autonomy and respect. These markets offer a variety of fresh seasonal produce, bread, pantry staples, and personal care items, with availability varying weekly. The program supports individuals experiencing challenges such as low income, unemployment, health issues, family violence, or homelessness
Locations and Access
LinC operates social supermarkets every Friday across five locations:
- Yarra Junction: 1:00 PM at the Community Room, Upper Yarra Family Centre
- Woori Yallock: 10:30 AM at Woori Yallock Presbyterian Church
- Millgrove: 10:30 AM at Millgrove Baptist Church
- Wandin North: 10:30 AM at Yarra Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church
- Mooroolbark: 9.00 AM
First-time visitors to most locations do not need to register. For those unable to attend in person, delivery options may be available upon inquiry. Call 0472 644 476 from 10am-1pm Tuesday – Friday during the school term. Leave a message and we will be in contact within 7 days.
Community Impact
In the 2024 financial year, LinC’s social supermarkets distributed over $1.62 million worth of fresh food, benefiting approximately 1,350 individuals weekly. The initiative has seen significant growth, with the Yarra Junction location alone increasing from 60 to 350 weekly participants within 18 months.
Beyond food provision, the program serves as a vital community hub, offering social interaction and support. Volunteers and partner organisations, including SecondBite, Aldi Seville, Outer East Foodshare, and local churches, play a crucial role in sustaining these services.
